Cannabichromene (CBC)
CBCCannabichromene, or CBC, is a non-intoxicating minor phytocannabinoid produced in hemp from the same precursor as CBD and THC.
CBC forms when cannabichromenic acid loses its carboxyl group through heat or aging, a step called decarboxylation. It is usually present at much lower levels than CBD, so on a certificate of analysis it often appears as a small percentage or below the reporting limit. CBC does not bind strongly to the CB1 receptor, which is why it is not associated with a high.
Laboratory studies suggest CBC interacts with other receptor families, including some involved in temperature and sensation, but this work is preclinical. It has been studied in cell and animal models, and there is no approved medical use and little human evidence. Readers may encounter CBC in the cannabinoid profile of full- or broad-spectrum extracts, including those sold for pets.
