Cannabichromenic acid (CBCA)

Cannabichromenic acid, or CBCA, is the acidic form of CBC that a living hemp plant produces before heat converts it.

Hemp does not make most cannabinoids in their neutral form. Instead, an enzyme converts cannabigerolic acid into CBCA, and CBCA becomes CBC only after decarboxylation, which happens with heat, light, or time. Raw plant material therefore contains far more CBCA than CBC, while a heated or aged extract shows the reverse.

On a certificate of analysis, CBCA is reported separately from CBC, and total CBC is sometimes calculated by adjusting for the weight lost during conversion. CBCA has its own preclinical research interest, but human evidence is minimal and it is best understood as a chemistry and reference term rather than an active ingredient. It is not CBD and should not be confused with cannabidiolic acid, which is the acidic precursor to CBD.
