Limonene

Cannabinoids

Limonene is a citrus-scented terpene found in orange and lemon peel and in many cannabis and hemp varieties.

It is one of the most widely used natural fragrance and flavor compounds and is also a common ingredient in cleaning products and cosmetics. In cannabis, limonene is often among the top few terpenes by weight, giving some chemovars their bright, citrus aroma. Terpene panels on a certificate of analysis report it alongside myrcene, pinene, and others.

Limonene is not a cannabinoid and does not bind cannabinoid receptors. It has been studied in preclinical models, but it is not established as something that enhances or changes what CBD does in the body, and any product statement to that effect goes beyond the evidence. Concentrated limonene can be an irritant to skin, and cats in particular are sensitive to citrus oils, which is worth knowing when reading a pet product's ingredients.
