The entourage effect is the hypothesis that cannabinoids, terpenes and other hemp compounds act differently in combination than any one of them does alone.

The idea originated in the 1990s from research on endocannabinoids, where inactive related molecules appeared to enhance the activity of the active ones, and it was later extended to plant extracts. It is the reasoning behind the distinction between full spectrum and broad spectrum products, which keep the plant's mixture of compounds, and isolate products, which contain a single purified cannabinoid.

The evidence is uneven. Some laboratory and animal studies show that specific pairs, such as CBD with THC, produce different effects than each alone, and a few human observations are consistent with that, while attempts to show that terpenes act on cannabinoid receptors have mostly been negative. Whether ordinary hemp extracts produce a meaningful entourage effect in people has not been established in controlled trials. The term is widely used in marketing, and readers should treat it as a hypothesis under study rather than a settled finding.
