Cannabidivarin (CBDV)

Cannabidivarin, or CBDV, is a minor non-intoxicating cannabinoid that is a shorter-chain, propyl analog of CBD.

CBD carries a five-carbon side chain; CBDV carries a three-carbon side chain and is otherwise closely related. It is produced from cannabidivarinic acid through decarboxylation, and it tends to be more abundant in certain hemp varieties, particularly some originating in Asia and Africa. Most commercial hemp contains only trace amounts, so it may appear at or below the reporting limit on a certificate of analysis.

CBDV has drawn research attention in neurologic contexts, and it has been studied in preclinical models and a small number of early human trials, with no approved use resulting. Its pharmacology overlaps with CBD in some respects, but findings about one should not be applied to the other. Pet owners are unlikely to see it named on animal products beyond the cannabinoid profile.
