Water-damaged building exposure
Water-damaged building exposure is time spent in a structure where moisture intrusion has allowed molds, bacteria and their fragments and byproducts to accumulate.
Leaks, floods, condensation and high humidity let microbial growth take hold in drywall, carpet, insulation and ductwork, and occupants inhale spores, cell-wall fragments, endotoxins and volatile organic compounds. Public health agencies link damp buildings to respiratory symptoms, asthma onset and worsening, and upper airway irritation. A subset of clinicians describe a broader multi-system illness, sometimes called chronic inflammatory response syndrome, though that framework is not universally accepted.
Assessment combines a history of symptoms and their timing relative to the building, a visual and moisture inspection of the structure, and in some cases environmental sampling; there is no single validated blood test that confirms the exposure. Remediating the moisture source is the central response. Cannabinoids have not been studied in any meaningful way for building-related illness.
