Mold exposure
Mold exposure is contact with airborne fungal spores, fragments or the volatile compounds molds produce, most often inside damp buildings.
Molds grow wherever moisture persists, including leaking roofs, flooded basements, poorly ventilated bathrooms and behind wet drywall. People breathe in spores and microbial fragments, and skin contact occurs when handling contaminated materials. Common responses include nasal congestion, sneezing, eye irritation, coughing and worsened asthma, particularly in people with mold allergy. Individuals with weakened immune systems can develop more serious fungal infections.
Assessment focuses on the person's symptoms, the timing of exposure and an inspection of the environment, since blood or urine tests for mold are not standardized for diagnosis. Public health agencies emphasize finding and fixing the moisture source as the main response. Some clinicians describe a broader inflammatory syndrome tied to water-damaged buildings, though that concept is debated. Cannabinoids have not been studied in a meaningful way for mold-related illness.
