Tetrahydrocannabivarinic acid (THCVA)

Tetrahydrocannabivarinic acid, or THCVA, is the acidic precursor that the plant produces before heat converts it into THCV.

It is built from a shorter-chain version of cannabigerolic acid by the same enzyme that makes THCA, and it converts to THCV through decarboxylation. Because the propyl cannabinoids are minor in most cannabis and rare in hemp, THCVA usually appears only in trace amounts, if a laboratory reports it at all.

Readers will encounter THCVA almost exclusively on extended-panel certificates of analysis, listed separately from THCV. There is very little research on THCVA itself, and it is best understood as a chemistry and reference term with no established activity of its own. It is unrelated to CBD beyond sharing a biosynthetic origin, and the similar abbreviations of THCVA, THCA, and CBDVA are a common source of confusion.
