Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the shorthand name for the intoxicating cannabinoids in cannabis, most often meaning delta-9 THC.

Strictly, THC is a family that includes delta-9 THC, the abundant natural form; delta-8 THC, a minor isomer; and THCA, the acidic precursor found in raw plant material. When a label, law, or lab report says THC without qualification, it usually means delta-9. THC produces its effects by activating the CB1 receptor and is the reason cannabis can cause impairment.

THC is the compound most often contrasted with CBD: both come from the same plant, but THC is intoxicating and CBD is not. In hemp products, the THC line on a certificate of analysis determines legal status and, for products formulated without it, is expected to read 0.0% THC. THC is recognized as toxic to dogs and cats, and pet owners should keep THC products out of reach and contact a veterinarian about any exposure.
