CBD for dogs refers to hemp-derived cannabidiol products marketed for canine use, the species with the most veterinary cannabinoid research to date.

Dogs absorb and eliminate cannabidiol differently from people, and published canine studies show that formulation, feeding, and body size all affect blood levels. Research has examined pharmacokinetics, tolerability, and early clinical questions including osteoarthritis, seizure disorders, skin disease, and stress-related behavior, mostly in small trials. Findings so far are preliminary, and the long-term safety of ongoing use has not been established. Elevated liver enzyme values are among the changes tracked in these studies.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved cannabidiol for use in dogs, and no product sold for pets has been reviewed for safety or effectiveness. Dogs are also the species most often affected by accidental cannabis exposure, where THC can cause ataxia, lethargy, urinary incontinence, and vomiting. Owners are encouraged to consult a veterinarian before considering any cannabinoid product, to keep all cannabis products out of reach, and to look for a certificate of analysis confirming contents and the absence of contaminants.
