Cannabinol (CBN)
CBNCannabinol, or CBN, is a mildly psychoactive minor cannabinoid that forms mainly when THC oxidizes with age, heat, and light.
Unlike most cannabinoids, CBN is not produced directly by the plant's enzymes; it accumulates as THC degrades, so aged or poorly stored cannabis tends to contain more of it. It binds the CB1 receptor much more weakly than THC and is generally described as only faintly intoxicating on its own. In hemp products, CBN is sometimes added as a purified ingredient rather than arising naturally.
CBN is widely marketed for nighttime use, and a handful of small controlled studies have examined it for sleep, but the evidence is early and results for CBN alone should not be transferred to CBD or to combination products. There is no approved medical use. Pet owners may see CBN on animal products as well; a veterinarian is the right resource for questions about an animal's rest or health.
