Cannabicyclol (CBL)
CBLCannabicyclol, or CBL, is a minor cannabinoid that forms when cannabichromene breaks down under light and heat.
CBL is not made directly by the plant's enzymes; it appears as a degradation product of CBC, particularly in material that has been exposed to ultraviolet light or stored for long periods. Because of this origin, it tends to be found in trace amounts in aged extracts and older plant samples. Its structure differs from CBC in that an extra ring has formed, and it is not thought to bind cannabinoid receptors in a meaningful way.
CBL rarely appears on a certificate of analysis unless the laboratory runs an extended cannabinoid panel. It has almost no research history in humans or animals, so its practical relevance for readers is mainly as a marker of how an extract has been handled and stored. It is unrelated to CBD beyond sharing a common origin in the hemp plant.
