CBD & Arthritis

Arthritis is a family of joint conditions — most commonly osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis — marked by inflammation that brings stiffness, swelling, and pain in varying degrees, at any age. Here is what peer-reviewed research says about cannabinoids and joint discomfort, and what our customers report.

"Very happy with Blue Sky maximum relief balm. As I have rheumatoid arthritis the balm is effective in treating areas that are painful such as the neck area or knee cap."

Understanding Arthritis

What arthritis is

Arthritis isn’t just “joint pain” — it’s a group of more than 100 conditions marked by inflammation, degeneration, or immune-mediated injury inside joints and surrounding tissues. Symptoms range from aching and morning stiffness to reduced range of motion, and flares can ripple into sleep, mood, and work.

  • Osteoarthritis — Wear-and-tear cartilage loss — the most common form
  • Rheumatoid — Autoimmune inflammation of the synovium
  • Psoriatic — Immune-mediated, alongside psoriasis

What the research says

The evidence is mixed and route-dependent: reviews find small but positive signals for topical CBD on hand osteoarthritis, and null results for oral CBD when rigorously tested. Trials remain few, heterogeneous, and prone to strong placebo responses.

Clinical & human trials

  • Topical CBD in shea butter improved pain and disability vs placebo in thumb-joint OA, with no serious adverse events. | RCT · Topical 6.2 mg/mL · Twice daily · 2 weeks
  • Transdermal CBD gel reduced pain and improved grip strength in hand OA; quality-of-life changes were inconsistent. | Open-label · Transdermal 4% w/w · Three times daily · 4 weeks
  • Oral CBD as add-on therapy did not outperform placebo on pain, sleep, or mood in hand OA and PsA. | RCT · Oral 20–30 mg/day · 12 weeks
  • Oral CBD 600 mg/day with acetaminophen added no analgesic benefit in knee OA, with more adverse events and liver-enzyme elevations. | RCT · Oral 600 mg/day · With acetaminophen

Dose & route

Outcomes appear route- and dose-dependent — topical and transdermal application shows the most consistent benefit for joint-level discomfort, which is why our recommendation below starts with the balm.
