Exercise-related inflammation is the temporary, normal inflammatory response the body mounts after strenuous or unaccustomed physical activity as part of muscle repair.

Intense effort causes small tears in muscle fibers and releases signaling molecules that draw immune cells to the tissue, producing local swelling, stiffness and the soreness that peaks a day or two later. Blood markers such as interleukin-6, C-reactive protein and creatine kinase rise transiently and then return to baseline. This acute response is part of adaptation and differs from chronic, low-grade inflammation associated with disease.

Researchers measure it through blood sampling before and after standardized exercise, alongside soreness scales and strength testing. Sleep, nutrition and progressive training loads shape how quickly the response resolves. A small pilot study observed trends in inflammatory markers after cannabidiol, but the sample was too small to draw conclusions, and the area remains emerging research rather than established anti-inflammatory treatment.
