Workplace drug testing

Workplace drug testing is the set of employer-run programs that screen employees or applicants for drug use, each with its own panel, cutoffs and consequences.

Programs range from federally regulated testing for safety-sensitive roles, which follow fixed rules, to private employer policies that may adopt any panel and threshold they choose. Testing may occur before hiring, at random, after an accident or on reasonable suspicion. Most use a urine screen followed by confirmatory testing, and many employ a medical review officer to evaluate results.

Cannabis panels look for THC-COOH, the metabolite of delta-9 THC, and do not target CBD. Whether a hemp product could contribute to a result depends on its actual THC content, how it is used and the program's cutoff, none of which a general statement can settle, so no product can guarantee an outcome. State laws on cannabis and on employer testing differ, and a program's written policy is the authority for how any result is handled. Reading that policy is the practical starting point.
