Net weight

Net weight, or net quantity of contents, is the amount of product in a container by weight or volume, excluding the packaging itself.

Federal labeling rules require it on the principal display panel, in both metric and U.S. customary units. Solids and semi-solids such as balms are declared by weight in grams and ounces; liquids are declared by volume in milliliters and fluid ounces. It is the denominator in any concentration calculation.

For a reader, net weight together with total cannabinoid content is what gives the concentration of a product: a stated amount of CBD in a small jar is more concentrated than the same amount in a large one. On a certificate of analysis, potency is often reported as a percentage or in milligrams per gram, and multiplying by the net weight yields the total for comparison with the label. Two products with the same milligram claim can differ widely in concentration once container size is taken into account.
