Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)

Good manufacturing practice, or GMP, is the general framework of quality management rules that govern how products are consistently produced and controlled.

The framework covers facility design and hygiene, equipment maintenance, staff training, written procedures, batch records, ingredient specifications and product testing. The underlying idea is that quality is built into the process and documented at each step, rather than inspected in at the end. Specific legal versions exist for drugs, foods, dietary supplements, cosmetics and medical devices, and the requirements differ substantially between them.

In CBD marketing, GMP appears in phrases such as made in a GMP facility or GMP certified, which can refer to different standards and different certifying bodies. The phrase describes the manufacturing environment rather than the product, so it complements rather than replaces a batch certificate of analysis. Because no federal category has been settled for most hemp-derived CBD products, the GMP rules a company follows are usually adopted voluntarily or under state law, and a reader can reasonably ask which ones.
