Drug-resistant idiopathic epilepsy is recurrent seizure activity in dogs that remains inadequately controlled despite appropriate trials of standard antiseizure medications.
Idiopathic epilepsy, the most common cause of seizures in dogs, has no identifiable structural or metabolic cause and is presumed genetic, with breeds such as Border Collies, Labrador Retrievers and Beagles overrepresented. A meaningful fraction of affected dogs continue to have frequent seizures even on two or more drugs, and these dogs face higher risks of cluster seizures, status epilepticus and medication side effects. Owners typically keep seizure diaries to track frequency and duration.
Veterinary neurologists confirm the diagnosis by excluding other causes with bloodwork, MRI and spinal fluid analysis, then monitor drug levels and adjust regimens. Cannabidiol has been studied as an add-on to conventional therapy in dogs with poorly controlled idiopathic epilepsy, with controlled data that are promising but not definitive, and any adjunct is decided by the treating veterinarian rather than replacing prescribed treatment.
