Diarrhea

Diarrhea is the passage of loose or watery stools more frequently than is normal for the person or animal.

It is a symptom rather than a disease, and it can arise from infection, dietary change, food intolerance, medications, stress, or underlying digestive disorders. Acute diarrhea lasts a few days and often resolves on its own; chronic diarrhea persists for weeks and generally warrants evaluation. Clinicians assess it by history, stool characteristics, hydration status, and, when needed, laboratory testing. In pets, owners are usually asked about recent diet changes, scavenging, and any new substances in the home.

Diarrhea was one of the more commonly reported adverse events in clinical trials of prescription cannabidiol, particularly at higher doses, and gastrointestinal upset has also been noted in some canine and feline studies. Inactive ingredients such as carrier fats can contribute to loose stools independently of the cannabinoid. Persistent diarrhea, blood in the stool, or signs of dehydration are reasons to seek medical or veterinary care.
