CBD for cats refers to hemp-derived cannabidiol products marketed for feline use, an area where scientific research is still very limited.

Cats are not small dogs. They metabolize many compounds differently because they lack certain liver enzyme pathways, and they are sensitive to some carriers and additives that dogs tolerate, so results from canine or human studies cannot be assumed to apply. Published feline work to date is small and has focused on pharmacokinetics and short-term tolerability in healthy cats. Reported signs of intolerance in that research have included excessive licking, head shaking, and gastrointestinal upset.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved cannabidiol for any use in animals, and products sold for cats are not evaluated for safety or effectiveness before they reach the market. Owners considering any cannabinoid for a cat should discuss it first with a veterinarian, particularly if the cat has liver or kidney disease or takes other medications. Products intended for people, and any product containing THC, essential oils, or xylitol, are inappropriate for cats. Veterinary guidance in this area is evolving as more research appears.
