The Science of CBD & CBG
Cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG) are two prominent non-intoxicating cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. While CBD has gained widespread recognition in recent years, CBG is emerging as an equally promising compound with unique properties. When used together, these cannabinoids may offer enhanced benefits through what researchers call the "entourage effect."
Both CBD and CBG interact with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex cell-signaling network that helps maintain homeostasis. However, they do so in different ways:
- CBD doesn't directly bind to cannabinoid receptors but influences them indirectly while affecting other receptor systems
- CBG directly binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors and may block enzymes that break down endocannabinoids
When CBD and CBG work together, they may enhance each other's beneficial properties while potentially mitigating unwanted effects—a synergistic relationship known as the entourage effect. Research suggests these cannabinoids may offer similar yet distinct potential benefits:
- Anti-inflammatory effects: Both compounds show promise in reducing inflammation through different pathways
- Neuroprotective potential: Each may support neurological health in unique ways
- Anxiety and stress response: Together, they might offer more comprehensive mood support
